General description
The homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) is a method used to quantify insulin resistance (IR) and beta-cell function that was published by Matthews et al. in 1985 and has since then been extensively validated. Higher the values of HOMA-IR indicate higher probability of insulin resistance. Cut off values for insulin resistance vary across different populations; a cut off value of > 2 is frequently used.

HOMA-IR = (fasting glucose concentration [mg/dL] × fasting insulin [mU/L])/405
Unit conversions:
