General description
Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) is a severity of disease classification system and mortality estimation tool used for patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs).
APACHE II uses a point score based upon initial values of 12 routine physiologic measurements, age, and previous health status; the data used for the calculation should be the most unfavourable physiological variable result, collected from a patient's initial 24 hours in an ICU. The sum of all points, ranging from 0 to 71, represents the final score and higher scores correspond to more severe disease and a higher risk of death.
APACHE II classification system was presented in 1985 by Knaus et al. as a revised and simplified version of the prototype system - APACHE, that was designed by the same authors in 1981. Since then it has been extensively validated worldwide in a variety of ICU settings and patient populations.
