General description
The Clinical global impression (CGI) score was developed in 1976 by the National Institute of Mental Health and is amongst the most widely used brief assessment tools in psychiatry. It is used in mental disorders to provide a brief, stand-alone assessment of the clinician’s view of the patient’s global functioning prior to and after initiating a study medication. It consists of 3 observer-rated items that measure illness severity (CGI-S), global improvement or change (CGI-C) and efficacy index (CGI-E). Each component of the CGI is rated separately; the instrument does not yield a global score.
