General description
The Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (PESI) was developed to estimate 30-day mortality in patients with acute PE. It uses 11 objective clinical items to produce a risk stratification score.

Formula
A total point score for a given patient is obtained by summing the patient’s age in years and the points for each predictor when present.
Reference values
Class I: Very low risk
≤ 65Class II: Low risk
66–85Class III: Intermediate risk
86–105Class IV: High risk
106–125Class V: Very high risk
